Q1: What is Wi-Fi?>>TOP

A Wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) provides Internet access via a computer or PDA that is equipped with a Wireless LAN Card, which implements the IEEE 802.11 wireless communications protocol, linked to a wireless LAN Access Point (or AP).

Q2: What is Chunghwa Telecom Public Wi-Fi Service (the "Service")?>>TOP

  1. The Service is an Internet access service provided by Chunghwa Telecom in public areas (otherwise known as Hotspots), where Wi-Fi quipment are installed to allow wireless connections by users to access HiNet service.
  2. Users will be able to access the global Internet (e.g. browsing the World Wide Web and sending and receiving e-mails) within the Wi-Fi service area built by Chunghwa Telecom and enjoy the benefits of wireless Internet services.

Q3: What is a Hotspot?>>TOP

A Hotspot is a public location where public Wi-Fi service is provided. Users are able to connect to the Internet via laptops or PDAs via the AP installed at the Hotspot. Refer to the following network configuration diagram.

Q4: How do I use this Service?>>TOP

  1. Users can access the Service at locations where Chunghwa Telecom Wi-Fi Hotspot signs can be found (see diagram below).
  2. Enable the Wi-Fi function on the laptop computer equipped with a Wireless LAN card or a wireless mobile device that supports the Wi-Fi specifications.
  3. Select Wi-Fi network SSID: CHT Wi-Fi(HiNet).
  4. Open the browser (e.g. IE, Firefox, Safari, Google Chrome and Opera), and the CHT Wi-Fi authentication screen will be shown automatically.
  5. Enter your user ID and password. Upon successful authentication, you will be able to connect to the Internet.

Q5: How do I sign up for this Service?>>TOP

  1. Call the toll-free service number 0800-080123.
  2. Apply in person at your local Chunghwa Telecom Service Center.
  3. Fill out the application information on CHT's web counter(https://123.cht.com.tw/webecss/sn164.htm), tCHT will assign person to contact you to apply for the Wi-Fi Service.

Q6: How do I pay for this Service? >>TOP

Currently the Service offers the following three payment options:

  1. Wi-Fi Unlimited Access Package:
    Charges incurred by Chunghwa Telecom's HiNet users when using this Service will be billed via regular HiNet account.
  2. Prepaid Card:
    The following three prepaid card options are available:
    (1) 1-day Card: Price: NT$99. The card is valid for 24 hours starting from the time the card is first used to connect to the Internet.
    (2) 3-day Card: Price: NT$199. The card is valid for 72 hours starting from the time the card is first used to connect to the Internet.
    (3) 7-day Card: Price: NT$299. The card is valid for 168 hours starting from the time the card is first used to connect to the Internet.
  3. By Usage Time:
    This option charges usage by minute at the rate of NT$1/minute. The same rate applies regardless of the time or location of access. The rate is NT$1 per minute; a fraction of a minute is counted as a full minute.

Q7: If I forget my password, how do I look it up?>>TOP

You cannot look up your HiNet password. If you have forgotten your password, please fax the following information so that the system administrator can make the necessary changes for you:

  1. For individual account
    (1) Copy of both sides of the applicant's national ID card
    (2) Include your user ID (HN-XXXXXXXX)
    (3) Daytime telephone number and contact person
    (4) Desired new password (at least 6 and at most 8 characters; uppercase and lowercase letters and digits accepted. Password must contain both digits and letters. Do not use special characters.)
  2. For corporate account
    (1) Copy of Business Registration Certificate
    (2) Include your user ID (HN-XXXXXXXX)
    (3) Daytime telephone number and contact person
    (4) Desired new password (at least 6 and at most 8 characters; uppercase and lowercase letters and digits accepted. Password must contain both digits and letter. Do not use special characters.)
  3. Fax
    (1) North Region: (02) 2321-9854

    For normal work day, fax request by 4:00p.m. and the new password will take effect after 9:00p.m.

Q8: If I am idle for a period of time while connected to the Service, what will the system do?>>TOP

If the user is idle for more than 10 minutes, we will disconnect the service and complete the billing for the session. The user will not be charged for the 10-minute idle time.

Q9:If I fail to log out of the Service using the normal procedure, what will the system do?>>TOP

  1. To prevent users from incurring large amounts of service charge unintentionally due to improper logout, as well as to prevent the limited resources of each Hotspot from being dominated by a few users for an extended period of time, we will automatically disconnect users who are connected for more than 4 hours and users who are idle for more than 10 minutes. The user will not be charged for the 10-minute idle time.
  2. For non-HiNet users, please refer to the instructions provided by your vendor.

Q10: Are vendors providing the Hotspots required to offer wireless network card rental service?>>TOP

  1. In general most users will have their wireless network cards already installed on their mobile devices.
  2. Vendors providing the Hotspots may purchase wireless network cards and offer rental service to their customers, and any revenues generated by that will belong to the vendors.

Q11: If vendors are interested in offering CHT Wi-Fi services to their customers, whom should they contact?>>TOP

Vendors who are interested in offering their locations for CHT's public Wi-Fi service may contact the project managers at their local CHT Operation Centers.

Q12: What is SMS Validation?>>TOP

SMS Validation is operators with the mechanism of assigning a short code to each service that it provides. Users obtain a specific service by calling the short code that corresponds to it. As most of the settings are already configured by the system operators, using this service will simplify the process of accessing specific services on the part of the users and increase their willingness to use these services. The service code assigned to this Service is: [735].

Q13: Will I be able to make phone calls with my cell phone while it is accessing the Internet via this Service? >>TOP

Yes, you can. The cell phone is required only when the data within its SIM card is needed for authentication purposes. If you have already applied for an emome account or have used the USSD service, the Wi-Fi service will not interfere with the cell phone's operations.

Q14: What is the service rate if I access this Wi-Fi service via USSD (SMS Validation)?>>TOP

The rate for this Service is NT$1 per minute; a fraction of a minute is counted as a full minute.

Q15: If I'm unable to access the logout screen due to interception of popup windows or a system crash, what do I do?>>TOP

To go offline, enter the web address https://88.wifi/ in the address bar to disconnect the service.

Q16: Will I be able to continue to use Wi-Fi service if my internet service is temporarily suspended? >>TOP

If your internet service is temporarily suspended, HN account users will not be able to use Wi-Fi service. However, you will still be able apply for this service with your CHT mobile phone service number, emome membership account or points accumulation card.
